Writing about Animals

In the 3/4 we brainstormed as many words as we could about this photo! 

Les Animaux à South Hero!

In the 1/2 and the 3/4 classes, we are learning animal names for the pets and the animals at our homes and farms. The 3/4 are also putting these animals into individual books using the sentences I like (J'aime....) and I don't like (Je n'aime pas...) We graphed the animals in our homes, comparing with more (plus) and less (moins). We are playing games with the animals, on cards and with plastic models.

5/6 Cooking Adventures

The 5/6 has been experimenting with French cooking, first using video lessons and 2nd with a written French recipe.

"In many places St. Nicholas is the main gift giver. His feast day, St. Nicholas Day, is December 6, which falls early in the Advent season. Some places he arrives in the middle of November and moves about the countryside, visiting schools and homes to find out if children have been good. 

Other places he comes in the night and finds carrots and hay for his horse or donkey along with children's wish lists. Small treats are left in shoes or stockings so the children will know he has come.

Where St. Nicholas is prominent, his day, not Christmas, is the primary gift giving day. Parties may be held on the eve, December 5th, and shoes or stockings left for St. Nicholas to fill during the night. Children will find treats of small gifts, fruit or nuts, and special Nicholas candies and cookies. St. Nicholas gifts are meant to be shared, not hoarded for oneself."

The " Bonjour" Song

Here is how we start each class in the kindergarten through 4th grades.

It's an echo song, greeting with Hello and asking everyone how they are doing: 

Bonjour. Bonjour.  

Ça va? Ça va?

Ça va bien. Ça va bien. :-)  (Thumbs up)

Ça va mal. Ça va mal. :-( Thumbs down)

Comme ci, comme ça. Comme ci, comme ça. :-|  (so, so gesture)

French Books for your home

Here is a recommendation for a great book to read at home!  My First French Phrases by Jill Kalz has the French, English and pronunciation for many introductory phrases! 

We can have Scholastic Book orders if there is enough interest!

Kindergarten through 4th grade French classes have resumed! I'll be posting what we are learning and experiencing, so you can share in the fun at home! 

We use gestures to express ourselves: 1) so a child who is not yet comfortable to try speaking French can share and 2) to keep the flow of the class going and 3) to keep speaking only French whenever possible. 

Thumbs up is a signal to show "ça va bien" (I'm doing well.) or to show agreement.
